Saw, knives, other items stolen from packer

A band saw worth more than $3,000 was stolen from Amend Packing Co., 410 S.E. 18th St. in Des Moines, after burglars opened a hole through two layers of brick on the west side of the building.

The thieves also took a rifle, a welder and about 15 skinning knives.

Police said the theft occurred over the weekend. The burglars entered the building in the main slaughter area. Nearly every room in the building was entered, except the coolers, which were locked.

Officers said it would take at least two adults to lift the cattle saw, which weighs about 500 pounds. Police found markings on the ground outside where the stolen property was dragged about 100 yards from the building.

Investigators have made no arrests.
